Ethiopian VAT Calculator

This tool is a simple and efficient Value Added Tax (VAT) calculator specifically designed for use in Ethiopia. It helps individuals and businesses quickly determine the VAT amount and the total price (including or excluding VAT) for transactions.

Current VAT Rate: As of May 2025, the standard VAT rate in Ethiopia remains at 15%. This calculator supports the standard rate, as well as 0% rated and exempt scenarios.

How to Use

Add VAT (Net → Gross)

Use this mode when you have a price before VAT is added (the Net Amount) and want to find out the total cost including VAT (the Gross Amount).

  1. Select the "Add VAT" tab
  2. Choose the applicable VAT Rate from the dropdown (Standard 15%, 0%, or Exempt)
  3. Enter the Net Amount (price before VAT) in the input field
  4. Click the "Calculate" button

The results will show the Input Amount (your Net Amount), the calculated VAT Amount, and the final Gross Amount (Net + VAT).

Remove VAT (Gross → Net)

Use this mode when you have a price that already includes VAT (the Gross Amount) and want to find out the original price before VAT was added (the Net Amount).

  1. Select the "Remove VAT" tab
  2. Enter the Gross Amount (price including VAT) in the input field
  3. Click the "Calculate" button

The results will show the Input Amount (your Gross Amount), the calculated VAT Amount that was included, and the original Net Amount (Gross - VAT).

Note: When removing VAT, the calculation assumes the standard 15% rate was originally applied. For 0% or Exempt items, the net and gross amounts will be the same.

Special Cases

  • 0% VAT: For items or services that are zero-rated, the VAT amount will always be 0, and the Net and Gross amounts will be the same.
  • Exempt: For items or services that are VAT exempt, no VAT is calculated. The input amount will be shown as both the Net and Gross amount, and the VAT amount will be 0.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the current standard VAT rate in Ethiopia?
A: As of May 2025, the standard VAT rate in Ethiopia is 15%.
Q: When should I use the "Add VAT" mode?
A: Use "Add VAT" when you have a price that does not include VAT and you need to calculate the total price with VAT added.

Q: What is the difference between 0% VAT and Exempt?

A: Both result in no VAT being charged to the final consumer, but they are legally distinct.

Always consult with a tax professional for complex situations.
Q: Can I use this calculator for historical VAT rates?
A: This calculator is set up for the current 15% standard rate. For historical calculations, you would need a tool configured for the specific rate applicable at that time.
